E. P. Pope Memorial Award

E. P. Pope Memorial Award to Dr. Beverly A. Byrum

The E. P. Pope Memorial Award is presented in memory of Dr. Edward P. Pope who was one of the founders of the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) and who served with distinction as its Secretary-Treasurer from 1950 to 1972. The award was established in his honor in 1974. The Pope Award is the highest award given by the Association and is presented to an individual who has made noteworthy and significant contributions to the Association in regard to implementation and advancing the recognition of the specialty of veterinary diagnostic laboratory medicine.

The 2007 Pope Memorial Award was presented to Dr. Beverly A. Byrum on October 21, 2007 during the 50th Annual Meeting of the AAVLD in Reno, Nevada. Dr. Byrum received her BA degree in Microbiology from the Ohio State University. She worked as a research microbiologist in the medical nutritional field for seven years before returning to school where she received her DVM and Doctorate degree in Veterinary Preventive Medicine from the Ohio State University.

Dr. Byrum is currently Director of Laboratories at the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA). She has worked at the ODA since 1994, serving as the Section Head for Bacteriology prior to being appointed Laboratory Director. She has been an adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine since 1994. In 2003, she assumed the role of Director of Laboratories at the ODA, which includes responsibility for the Consumer Analytical Laboratory. As Director of ODA Laboratories, Dr. Byrum facilitated the addition of the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory to the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) and the membership of the Consumer Analytical Laboratory as a cooperative agreement project laboratory to the Food Emergency Response Network. In 2005, Dr. Byrum oversaw the integration the Analytical Toxicology Laboratory (ATL) to the ODA laboratory system. The ATL is the official laboratory for the Ohio State Racing Commission. Since 1999, Dr. Byrum has participated in three laboratory capital improvement projects that have resulted in a combined 75,000 sq ft renovation and additions that include a state-of-the-art necropsy suite, alkaline digestor bay, and biosafety level 3 laboratories. In 2006, the Ohio Departments of Health and Environmental Protection Agency moved to new laboratories in the ODA complex. Dr. Byrum supported this co-location, which facilitates the state's laboratory response to emergency and emerging zoonotic disease outbreaks.

At the national level, Dr. Byrum has served in many capacities. As a member of the AAVLD Accreditation committee, she has been instrumental in the adoption of new internationally recognized standards, consistent with the World Animal Health Organization (OIE) guidelines for laboratory accreditation. She has served on the AAVLD Executive Committee, has been Chair of the AAVLD Laboratory Director committee, and served for five years on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation. Through the U.S. Animal Health Association, Dr. Byrum was a founding member of the Johne's Disease Work Group and served as Chair of the Johne's Disease Serology Quality Control Subcommittee and as a member of the Johne's Disease Scientific Subcommittee. Dr. Byrum has served as Chair of the Cattle Health Committee of the National Institute for Animal Agriculture, has recently served on the NAHLN Steering Committee, and participated in one of the first multi-state exercises that activated the NAHLN emergency plan. She was appointed to the U.S. Animal Health Association Integrated Consortium of Laboratory Networks Subcommittee for Scenarios and Threat Prioritization. She currently is a member of the USAHA/AAVLD Committee for Animal Emergency Management.

Dr. Byrum and her husband Jim Byrum have two sons: Jamie, who is an MBA student at the OSU Fisher School of Business, and Eric, who is a third-year medical student at the OSU College of Medicine.

A word from Dr. Byrum

I am honored and humbled to have received the E. P. Pope Memorial Award for contributions to the organization and veterinary diagnostic medicine at the 50th Annual Meeting of the AAVLD. It has been a privilege to work with many dedicated staff members at the Ohio ADDL and to interact with professionals across the country through the AAVLD. Thank you for this moment to reflect and I look forward to continuing our efforts to improve the discipline of veterinary diagnostic medicine and to prepare a path for the next generation of diagnosticians.

Beverly A. Byrum
